CITIES THAT ARE TRANS FORMED
Emblematic streets, picture-postcard corners, monuments and historical buildings,nature parks, etc., are some of the favourite locations for renowned directors and the top level productions that have been shot in different Spanish cities.
SEVILLE
to create the images of the beautiful Theed Palace, in the capital city of planet Naboo, George Lucas used Plaza de España in Seville, which provided the perfect location for shooting a sequence of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of
the Clones. This is one of the city’s most spectacular spots: a semicircular plaza
walked in by a young Anakin Skywalker, Princess Amidala and the ever faithful
R2-D2.
Cádiz & Jerez
Cádiz appears in Knight and Day and famously doubled as Havana in Die Another Day, using locations such as the Campo del Sur, Santa Catalina Castle and La Caleta Beach, where Halle Berry filmed her iconic scene.
Nearby beaches in San Fernando and Jerez also appear in The Crown and other productions.
Bilbao & San Sebastián
Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum features in Die Another Day and Jupiter Ascending, its titanium curves lending a futuristic feel.
San Sebastián appears in Rifkin’s Festival and the Balenciaga series.
The futuristic City of Arts and Sciences was chosen for Tomorrowland thanks to its avant-garde design. Its striking buildings also appear in Westworld, Andor and the series Citadel.
Barcelona
Barcelona’s architecture and atmosphere make it one of Spain’s most cinematic cities. Vicky Cristina Barcelona showcases the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, Park Güell, the MACBA, Tibidabo and charming squares like San Felipe Neri.
In Perfume, the Gothic Quarter becomes 18th-century Paris, with locations such as the Labyrinth of Horta and Poble Espanyol.
Other films shot in the city include All About My Mother, L’Auberge Espagnole, The Machinist and Manuale d’amore 2.
Canary Islands
The Canary archipelago offers dramatic landscapes perfect for epic and sci-fi productions.
In Fuerteventura, beaches like Risco del Paso, Corralejo, Cofete and the Pecenescal valley appear in Exodus, Wonder Woman 1984, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Allied.
Tenerife’s Teide National Park and Los Gigantes cliffs feature in Clash of the Titans, while Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes appear in Doctor Who, Foundation and films by Almodóvar.
Balearic Island
Mallorca’s Sa Calobra Cove appears in Cloud Atlas, and the island is also seen in The Night Manager and Special Ops: Lioness.
Formentera plays a major role in Sex and Lucía, with locations such as Ses Illetes, Ses Salines and the Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse.
Almería
Almería’s deserts and coves are legendary film settings. The Tabernas Desert and Mónsul Beach appear in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the region also hosted Conan the Barbarian.
Dozens of spaghetti westerns were filmed here, and sites like Oasys MiniHollywood and Fort Bravo preserve their original sets.
Madrid
Madrid has starred in countless productions. Gran Vía, Plaza de Callao, Plaza Mayor and Chueca often appear in Pedro Almodóvar’s films.
Open Your Eyes famously shows an empty Gran Vía; The Day of the Beast highlights the Carrión building.
Money Heist uses the Bank of Spain, the CSIC, Plaza de Callao and the ABC newsroom, while The Bourne Ultimatum features Atocha Station, Terminal T4 and aerial views of Paseo de la Castellana.
